Iwami (岩美町Iwami-cho) is a seaside town located in Tottori Prefecture, Japan. It is the locale upon which the town of Iwatobi is based in the anime series Free!
The Iwami region lies in the western part of Shimane Prefecture, a rural prefecture on the Sea of Japan, geographically remote from the larger cities, and cut off the the nearest major city of Hiroshima by the Chūgoku mountain range. This is old rural Japan.
It is an area steeped in culture and traditions.
